Identifying Japanese Knotweed stems

Hollow with segments similar to bamboo

Japanese Knotweed stems will reach 2-3 metres high in maturity and will be hollow in the centre and somewhat like bamboo.

They are green and become darker in maturity with red speckles. The mature stem begins their life with red buds emerging from the plants crown (base of plant).

In the winter the stems become brittle as the plant goes into winter dormancy, taking all the nutrients underground.
